Set up the Japanese keyboard

Open iPhone Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard, then choose Japanese Kana or Japanese Romaji. Hold the keyboard globe to switch keyboards during practice.

Voice practice

Select Voice in the app and allow microphone access when prompted. On iOS 26 and later, Japanese recognition runs on your device and may need Apple speech assets downloaded. On iOS 17–25, recognition runs on your device where supported; otherwise Apple speech services require an internet connection. Keyboard practice remains available without microphone access.

Unlock or restore the course

The first three lessons are free. The Full Hiragana Course is a single non-consumable purchase with no recurring charge. Open Settings → Restore purchase using the Apple Account that bought the course. Apple handles payment and refunds.

Your progress

Progress is stored locally on your iPhone. Use Settings → Reset learning progress to start over. Deleting the app removes local progress. Purchases can be restored separately.

About the course

Key Rally currently teaches hiragana, not kanji or katakana. Voice practice checks recognized sounds and words. It does not provide pitch-accent evaluation or pronunciation scoring.
